i don't think food's a good idea

[ Even if he did manage to force himself to eat something, he doubts he'd manage to keep it down. All of that terror and helplessness had left him queasy and weak. He didn't even notice that, right until Rey brought up food. Strange, how disconnected he feels from his own body. He's sore from the waiting room chairs, from sitting still and not moving, all his thoughts occupied with whether Eddie's body was going to make it, with all the damage that had been done to it. ]

[ Cisco stands up when he sees Rey coming into the waiting room. The signs of distress are subtle, and yet unmistakable. He looks smaller, younger, somehow lost. There are no signs that he's been crying, or raging, or any other great gestures of misery. But his nails are bitten to the quick, and his expression is fragile.

He moves to hug Rey without saying anything, glad that she is here. He's suddenly acutely aware of how delicate people are, how easily damaged. It's reassuring just to see her, to see and feel that she is entirely alright. ]

They won't let me see him yet. It's too soon after the surgery. They need to watch him, make sure there are no complications.

[ Rationally, Cisco understands it, and he's willing to go along with whatever procedures they think are best, to make sure Eddie is okay. But it's hard, sitting in this awful room, alone, wondering, silent, in suspense.

Even saying that much to Rey felt like a great burden; his voice is cracked and strange from not being used for so long. All his usual jokes and evasions and chatter - even in the face of sadness - are absent, now. The silence is somehow more awful than any sobbing could be. He just resumes his seat, staring off a little into the distance, lost and waiting until he can be with Eddie again. Once he's with Eddie again, it'll be okay. ]
